If you had been lucky enough to go to an Ed Diddle Basketball Camp as a high schooler in 1961, and then gone on to play for the Hilltoppers in 1965-66, you would've been on the same team as Clem Haskins and Dwight Smith (THINK ABOUT THAT! Then, go outside and shoot some hoop, won'cha?)
Yep, this is the same season where Western was ranked 10th in the final poll. Same one went 24-3 but whose season ended on a controversial jump-ball call in a 80-79 loss to Michigan.
What happened?
Well, Western was up 79-78 and a jump ball was called between WKU's Greg Smith and Michigan's Cazzie Russell. According to the YouTube description, "Smith was called for a foul when he jumped into Russell. WKU fans feel to this day that the referee did not throw the ball straight up between the two players, throwing it up more towards Russell, causing Smith's jump. Russell went to the line and sank two free throws to give Michigan the win." You can watch below.
