This is one of the most wonderful stories in Kentucky high school basketball lore. Year: 1951. A little school from Graves County with fewer than 100 students, is taught how to play like the Harlem Globetrotters and, then, runs off to the state tourney with only one loss to their discredit, then runs into a buzzsaw of a team in Clark County in the final and loses by 24 points.

The next year the Cubs vowed to win it all and win it all they did -- in double-overtime over DuPont Manual. Hero of the game? A kid named Charles "Doodle" Floyd!

The greatest impact a Cuba player made on the game of basketball came from Howie Crittenden. Howie was named all-state his last two years and a high school All-American in his senior season. When his days as a Cuba Cub ended, Howie took his skills to Murray State where he became the Racers' all-time leading scorer and the first to top the 2,000 point mark (now eclipsed mostly because of 3-point shooters like Isaiah Canaan), and still holds the school record for free throws made with 731, a mark that ranks as the 14th best in NCAA history.

Now, The Uncommonwealth has added Cuba's lore to our huge list of retro-styled wear. If you have a basketball fan or a Graves Countian in your extended family, pick this up for 'em.

If you wanna read more about it, check this out from Murray State's WKMS or watch this segment from the Kentucky Sports Legends series, produced by Sonora's Charles Thurman.
