There are two stories about the origin of the "high five" that relate to Kentucky. One was a definite hoax (the one about Lamont Skeets @ Murray State) but we @ the Uncommonwealth swear on the other, a story that dates back to the '70s and the Louavul Cards. Seems like that during a practice during the 1978–1979 season, Wiley Brown went to give some old-fashioned low-five love to teammate Derek Smith, but Smith looked Brown squarely in the eye and said, "No. Up high." According to Wiki entries, Brown thought, "Yeah, why are we staying down low? We jump so high," raised his hand and the high five was supposedly born.
High fives can be seen in highlight reels of the 1978–1979 Louisville team, and some added proof from a NCAA Final Four game where Al McGuire and Billy Packer evangelize for the gesture.
