DIXON DEFEATS POOLE TO WIN THIRD REGION FINALS

Webster County Quint to enter State Contests

Nebo and Madisonville Eliminated in Semi-Finals at Earlington

Earlington, Ky., March 9 -- (Special) -- The Dixon Dragons won the cage championship of the Third Region and the right to represent the region in the state basketball tournament by outmaneuvering a quintet of scrappy Poole Tigers to win the finals of the tournament by a 30-26 margin here tonight. Dixon's sweep through the two-day regional tournament began with a brilliant victory, 24-18, over a powerful Henderson Purple Flash.

In the semi-finals, the Dragons smeared Nebo 36-28. An all-tournament squad of eight players, picked by tournament officials and sportswriters placed Jones of Nebo, Brill of Dixon and D. Melton of Poole as forwards; Crowe of Dixon and R. Tapp of Poole as pivot men and Jones of Dixon, Deal of Madisonville and Peyton of Nebo as guard.

Each member of the all-tourney team was awarded silver basketballs. Dixon was presented the championship trophy, Poole, the runner-up award, and Nebo the third place trophy.

Dixon won her way to the finals defeating Nebo, 36-28 in the first morning game. Dixon got away to a slow start but made the most of a big second quarter to grab a substantial lead.

Nebo's Aces outscored the Dragons in the third period. At the end of the quarter, Dixon led by only a two-goal margin but the Dragons drew away from their opponents in the final canto. Poole won the second semi-final tilt, defeating Madisonville, 40-22, after getting away to a similarly slow start.

At the quarter Poole trailed, 7 to 4, and at the half held a bare 13-12 advantage. At the three-quarter mark, the totals stood, 24-17. In the last period, the Maroons staged a formidable tally, coming within two points of their opponents, but clever shooting by the Poole squad snatched the fat out of the fire.

In a hard-fought preliminary that was one of the best games of the entire meet, the Nebo Purple Aces won the third place distinction by nosing out Madisonville, 30 to 27. The game was close all the way, neither team ever being in the van by more than four points.

Dixon's towering basketeers had things their own way in the first quarter of the final game, scoring nine points, while R. Tapp made three free throws for Poole's total of the period. The second quarter was much like the first, with Dixon making 12 points to Poole's seven.

The two aggregations battled on almost even terms in the third stanza, which ended 27-17, but in the last period Poole's Bengals spurted amazingly, and when the final whistle blew were only four points behind. Joe Brill, whose perfectly timed push shots were the feature of the scrap, Crowe and Tapp were outstanding for the Dixon floor artists. Cates and R. Tapp, who led the Poole rally, topped the Tiger list.

Drawings Held for State Tournament Which Will Open Today

Lexington, Ky., March 13 (AP)--Drawings for the state high school basketball tournament to be held here Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week were made tonight at a meeting of the coaches of the teams entered in the tourney.

The drawings and the times set for the first round games follow: Kirksey vs. Danville, 1 p.m. Tompkinsville vs. Annville, 2 p.m. Frankfort vs. Newport, 3 p.m. Dixon vs. Maysville, 4 p.m. Campbellsville vs Mt. Sterling, 5 p.m. St. Xavier vs. Benham, 7 p.m. Calvert City vs. Bardstown, 8 p.m. Central City vs. Inez, 9 p.m. The first round games will be played Thursday, quarterfinals Saturday afternoon and the finals Saturday night.

DIXON AND CENTRAL CITY BEATEN IN FIRST ROUND

Maysville Cops Webster Boys and Golden Tide Licked by Inez.

Lexington, Ky., March 14. -- Three of the five outstanding tournament favorites had been eliminated at the close of the first round of the Kentucky Interscholastic Basketball meet at the University gymnasium here tonight. They were Central City, Benham, and Frankfort. Central City's Golden Tide, the winner of the Little Sixteen net title and the outstanding cage representative from Western Kentucky, went down 20 to 15 before Inez in the closing game of the day.

Newport, a squad which the observant fans are predicting is headed for the state title, trounced Frankfort 30 to 20. St. Xavier, another favorite for the championship dropped Benham 22 to 16 in one of the best games of the first round. Kirksey, a powerful aggregation from the Mayfield region, was no match for Danville, the last half of the five picked teams, and lost, 33 to 19.

Dixon's Dragons, who won their way to the state meet by beating Poole in the finals of the Third Regional fracas, lost a strictly defensive game to Maysville 15 to 12. In the quarterfinals today, Maysville plays Tompkinsville, Newport meets Maysville, Mt. Sterling tackles St. Xavier, and Calvert City tangles with Inez.

St. Xavier of Louisville went on to win the 1935 State Tournament by defeating Newport 32-18.
