We have our Friend of the Uncommonwealth, Brian who works at the Louisville Free Public Library, to thank for this idea.

If you grew up in Kentucky in the '80s, you're probably aware of the public service announcement "Have You Hugged Your Kid Today?". Maybe these lyrics will help shake your cobwebs off...

Can't you see that I'm on the phone?
Hold it down, I just got home!
Isn't enough that I work all day?
At least you get a chance to get away!
Dishes, diapers, dirty rags!
Bosses, bills and nag, nag, nag!
Shut up kid, you're in the way!
I'M SO MAD I COULD SLAP YOUR FACE!!!

Did I do something wrong....?

Have you hugged your kid today?
Have you sent him on his way?
With Love, Love, Love, Love, Love.
She's a person just like you.
She's got feelings too.
So give her love, la la love, love, la la love, love, la la love, loooovvvee!

The genesis of the "Have You Hugged..." slogan began with Jack Lewis in 1975. Jack was a Kentucky state government worker who spread his mantra on bumper stickers, television commercials, and T-shirts.

In June 1976, Jack's 9-year-old daughter Susan wrote about that in a Herald-Leader essay contest. Lewis worked hard not only for his family but also for other children as he was serving as commissioner of social services.

"He hugs all of us every day, and we hug him too," Susan wrote.

And, to you, Jack, Susan, and everyone else who continues to hug their kids -- because that's we do in Kentucky -- a little apparel homage.
