A friend of the Uncommonwealth, Bill Rieke, told us the backstory of his grandfather, D.D. Stewart, and we found it so interesting we created a design around one of D.D.'s businesses to pay homage.

D.D. was quite the entrepreneur -- started out in the coal business in his native Pineville, then traded part of his coal biz to Kentucky Utilities for the transit system K.U. owned in Lexington (now, the Lexington Transit Corporation). When WWII came along, D.D. heard that the Navy could use some rope, so he opened up a hemp business in Versailles and that's where this design sprang from. If you'd like to read more D.D. Stewart, here's a little to whet your appetite.
