Back to the days when the Louisville Colonels were a Boston Red Sox farm team -- when they used the same font* as the Sox for their uniform lettering *(it's called Tuscan, btw).

Through the 1940s and 1950s the Colonels were part of the Red Sox farm system, and they won the pennant in 1954 but the Red Sox transferred its farm team to San Francisco after the 1955 season. But the Sox came callin' again in 1968 and hung with the Colonels through the 1972 season.

According to the Filson Historical Society, notable players to come through Louisville during that time include Carlton Fisk, Luis Tiant, and Cecil Cooper. Finally, in 1982 the team that is now known as the Louisville Bats moved to Louisville.

And the guy pictured above -- Billy Gardner? Billy was a stud infielder for the Giants, Yankees, Red Sox and others -- nicknamed "Shotgun" for his rifle arm, Gardner led American League second basemen in fielding percentage in 1957 (.987), including 55 consecutive errorless games, and finished with a .976 fielding mark all-time.

Later, Billy became a coach/manager. After his time as skipper of the Louisville Colonels, he was the manager of both the Royals and Twins where he incorporated young players such as Kent Hrbek and Kirby Puckett into the Twins' lineup which began building the foundation two of the club's World Series appearances.
